The short answer is no. Almost all states allow what is called direct access. This allows a patient to go straight to physical therapy and receive the care they need. There has been significant research on this topic showing that early access to physical therapy significantly reduces medical costs to the patient. A recent study with over 100,000 people showed that patients who saw a physical therapist within 10 days of the start of back pain had significantly fewer surgeries, used much less medication, had fewer MRI's and the overall out of pocket cost to the patient went down by over $4,000!
This is a frequent question that can cause a lot of anxiety for people. Unfortunately, health care costs continue to go up in the United states. However, there is some good news! There is so much research that shows physical therapy actually saves money for the vast majority of patients. Common sense would tell you that a few sessions of physical therapy is far less than the overall cost of a surgery.
Most insurance plans including Medicare, are fairly friendly towards physical therapy services. There may be some out of pocket cost to meet your deductible (which would happen no matter what kind of medical service you chose) and there may be a copay or coinsurance for each visit. We do offer cash pay options at a discount if insurance is not an option. We certainly never want your physical therapy care to be a financial burden but when you look at the big picture it's often a fraction of the cost of a single MRI or especially a surgery. As a courtesy to our patients we will always check on your physical therapy insurance benefits for you so you know what to expect and there are no surprises.

There are actually two parts to this question. The first part is about individual sessions. Unfortunately over the years we've seen way too many patients being crammed into individual therapists schedules. This causes many patients to feel hurried and rushed in their treatments. We don't think this is the right way to treat patients! We schedule patients typically for 45 to 60 minutes, and we work one-on-one with our patients to make sure they get the best possible care each visit.
The second part to this question is about how many visits? This can vary quite a bit depending on your problem but historically we know that most patients see us somewhere from 8 to 14 visits typically, often over the course of one to two months. One thing that is important to us is you feel informed and educated on the process. We will always do our best to outline your expected treatment plan and number of visits so there are no surprises.
